What Is Cannabinol (CBN)? What Scientific Studies Say About It.

CBN, also known as Cannabinol, is one of the 100+ active chemical compounds extracted from the cannabis plants. Though it is the earliest compound to be derived from the cannabis plant due to the widespread popularity of CBD (Cannabidiol) and THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), many of us don’t even know the name of the compound.

But, after some recent scientific studies have concluded that using CBN products as a form of medication can be more effective than CBD & THC in many cases, people (i.e., industry experts, patients, and businesses) are starting to care more about CBN enriched products.

Suppose you have done some research on Cannabinoids. In that case, you might know that THC is a psychoactive compound, and CBD is an entirely non-psychoactive compound. But, in the case of CBN, researchers have split into two parts. Some claim CBN to be psychoactive, while others claim it to be non-psychoactive.

What Is Cannabinol (CBN)

As stated earlier, CBN is an active compound (cannabinoid) extracted from the cannabis plant. First discovered in 1896, people thought it is the compound in cannabis that is responsible for making people high.1 But, when THC was extracted from cannabis plants researchers confirmed that THC is responsible for the intoxicating effects and CBN is an oxidation product that naturally occurs when THC is exposed to heat and light.2

Like other medicinal cannabinoids, such as CBD &THC, CBN interacts with the human endocannabinoid system (ECS). It mainly interacts with CB1 receptors, but not as heavily as a THC does. That’s because while THC is a psychoactive compound, CBN is a mildly psychoactive compound. Though there is still a shortage of enough research data to support CBN’s effectiveness, researchers have confirmed that CBN might help in treating several health issues.

Because of newly confirmed benefits of CBN, more and more cannabinoid products, like Extreme Relief Plus or Terpene Tincture Bundle, are now carrying CBN in order to improve medicinal effectiveness. Here is a very informative article on BSH Terpene Tincture you can check.

CBN can improve the quality of sleep

As CBN carries sedative properties, studies concluded that it could increase the sleeping time and quality. But, most of the research also noted that the effectiveness of CBN significantly improves when it is infused with THC and other essential oils.3, 4, 5

Can alleviate pain

A 2019 study found that CBN has analgesic (i.e., pain relief) properties that can improve the patient’s condition.6 CBN primary interacts with CB1 receptors of our ECS and influence the activities our nerves so that it can handle the pain with ease and heal better.7, 8

Has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties

Like CBD, CBN also can fight with bacteria and reduce inflammation. When infused with CBD, CBN can interact with our CB2 receptors of ECS and improve our immunity.9 A study conducted in 2018 found that CBN can be useful in treating MRSA, a disease caused by bacteria but resistant to antibiotics.10

Can improve appetite

As CBN is a mildly psychoactive compound, it can interact with our neurons and increase our appetite. This is a benefit that can’t be found in CBD. This property can be particularly beneficial for those who are suffering from a lack of appetite due to illness, like cancer.11,

So, above are some benefits that researchers believe CBN can offer to our overall health. As more and more research is being conducted on CBN, we can definitely be hopeful that soon we will have more accurate data on this compound. Till then, people suffering from the above health complexities can take CBN medication after consulting with a physician.
